Feast Days

Oh, When the Saints Go Marching In...
Cornflower and about 50 friends celebrated the Feast of All Saints' Day on November 1st with a parade of saints. The kids had to introduce with three clues the saint they represented and let the others guess who they were. Food and additional games as well as the company of friends made for a wonderful party.

Here are Cornflower's clues:
1. One of the three female doctors of the Church.
2. She wrote many sayings which are much quoted including:
"Let nothing trouble you, let nothing make you afraid. All things pass away. God never changes. Patience obtains everything. God alone is enough."
3. She was a Carmelite nun.

Still no idea? Final bonus clue: She was born in Avila.

FROM ONE FEAST DAY TO THE NEXT:

Cornflower and a couple dozen friends gathered on All Souls' Day (November 2nd) for Mass and then fulfilled the time-honored tradition of remembering and praying for those who have died. Since many of us no longer live near the places where family or friends who have died were buried, we go to a local cemetary and pray there and place flowers at those graves which seem unattended.

An unusual tradition? Well, yes, not common in modern day...but it is a good way to have kids learn to remember their family members who have died AND remember that they live in the promise of something more than just our lives on this earth. These kids are not "scared" by cemeteries and natural death. It is the natural order of things.
