So you want to be a chemist?

For our "Adventures in Science" Club which meets weekly, we have been studying about matter, atoms, molecules and their physical and chemical structures. The club members have enjoyed their forays in the world of chemistry as they experiment, research, build models, learn memonics and even write up lab reports. Recently they had to "Adopt-An-Element" and after researching it, build a model of the element, and be able to report about it to the other members.

The whole process proved to be a great learning experience and worked right into the October theme for the "For the Children's Sake Academic Presentation Program" (10/14). Cornflower decided to present on the element she had researched (oxygen) and using her model and other visual aids, she presented her learning to the FCS audience at a local public library.

She did a great job. One audience member commented that Cornflower's explanation was clearer than that of her high school teacher and another asked if she wanted to be a chemist when she grew up. Does she? She doesn't think so, but at least her first look at chemistry proved to be a positive one (no pun intended!)
